Outpost 1 is, as far as anyone knows, the only world of its kind yet. Built literally from scratch by some of the middle powers of the Confederation of Worlds, it was originally terraformed into a jungle, then slowly civilised over a period of 400 years. Just over half the world has been converted into modern steel, beams and technology. Whether the rest of the world was going to be converted or left isn't know, but the construction begun by those beings ended abruptly 2 000 years ago, just 100 years after they'd completed the conversion to technology.
Outpost One has been a lot of things in just 2 500 years. Even with half the world converted to "modern" ways, the agricultural half produces enough fod and such to make Outpost 1 largely self-sufficient. In the beginning, it was envisioned as a neutral territory at the edge of the galaxy for races and people to meet and work out differences. After the Grek incident, it became a place to declare wars and make and break alliances almost overnight. When the Hingari invaded and the portal system began malfunctioning, Outpost 1 was largely abandoned. However, since the portal co-ordinates leading to Outpost 1 have been functional while many others have failed, the outpost has become a small trade centre of late and a hospital for the wounded and dying.
With most of its technologies of unknown design or purpose, much of the potential of Outpost 1 is lost or forgottten. People arriving expecticting the glamour it had 2 000 years ago find a cramped, tight place brimming with hostility, hatred and fear. It's a place where "Anything can happen" as the slogan once said . .. only the Confederation officials are preventing anything from happening as it is.
